Addressing Insomnia in New Zealand
If you find yourself tossing and turning, lying awake while others are blissfully sleeping, and waking up feeling as though you've been awake all night, you are not alone.
Statistics show that 1 in 4 New Zealanders experience regular insomnia. Insomnia comes in two main forms - onset, which is difficulties falling asleep, and maintenance, struggling to stay asleep.
The repercussions of a poor night's sleep extend beyond just feeling tired. It can affect mental and physical well-being, leading to issues such as fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, reduced immunity, and hormone imbalances.
Numerous factors can lead to insomnia, including medication, stimulants like sugar and caffeine, anxiety, and stress and poor sleep hygiene.
Making lifestyle changes and adopting healthy sleep habits can improve sleep quality. This includes practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, avoiding stimulants for at least 2 hours before bedtime, limiting screen time 30 minutes before bed, and allowing a significant gap between the evening meal and bedtime.
Establishing good sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a comfortable sleeping environment, free from bright lights and electronic disturbances, and adhering to a consistent bedtime, can also positively impact sleep.
For those who require additional support, natural supplements and botanical remedies can be beneficial in encouraging restful sleep. At The Travelling Naturopath NZ, I offer two sleep blends, "Fast Asleep Child" and "Restful Sleep," which incorporate flower essences and target emotional triggers such as a busy mind, overwhelming feelings, or post-fright experiences. These blends are available for purchase in my shop.
Supporting individuals of all ages who struggle with insomnia is a cause close to my heart, and I am dedicated to improving their sleep experiences. If you are longing for a refreshing, uninterrupted night's sleep, feel free to reach out to explore the right support for you.
